A little dog became a victim of a dog attack. Witnesses say they saw a pitbull that belonged to an off-duty police officer, attack a two-and-a-half year old Pomeranian Papillon mix, when the little dog was playing with a ball at Montrose beach. The little dog’s name was Willy and he died three days after the attack.
Audrey Fisher, who was Willy’s owner, said in an interview that the officer refused to give any kind of information to her once the attack occurred. “I wanted him to stop and talk to us… and he just wouldn’t,” Fisher said. Also, the owner tells to WGN-TV that she owes near to $6,000 in veterinary bills.
Even though the officer did not identify himself, several of the witnesses came to police with descriptions and camera cell phone pictures of him. Police had distributed fliers trying to find out someone who could recognize the owner of the pitbull.
This time only a little dog was the victim. Very often victims of dog injuries are children. The Chicago injury attorneys Zneimer & Zneimer have prosecuted many personal injury cases, caused by dog attacks.
Chicago Police launched an internal investigation against the five-year veteran officer whose pitbull killed Willy and the department said that he was cited for not having reported the attack within 24 hours of it occurrence on March 17.
After some time the officer informed the department of his involvement in the incident and was relieved of his police powers, while the investigation is pending.
The department said in a prepared statement that “The Chicago Police Department expects its members to demonstrate the highest standards of conduct, and will not permit wrongdoing to go unaddressed.”
The victim in this case was another dog, but it might have been a child or anyone else who was near of the pitbull in that moment. Because sometimes animals are unpredictable, it is important that people are aware of the risks when large dogs are near them or their children or their smaller dogs, and take the appropriate precautions. Careless dog owners, who permit their dogs to attack another person or a dog, are responsible for the harm.
